My husband and I are working to unite locally owned small businesses and educate Des Moines consumers on the importance of buying from these merchants. It’s not like many people don’t know that they prefer to buy local and maybe we presume that small business needs our help, but it’s the mission we’ve chosen. Through dsmBUZZ, we’re networking together merchants and offering free collective marketing power while providing perks to consumers who support businesses that are part of the network.

Since we started dsmBUZZ, the word ‘networking’ has taken on new and powerful meaning for me personally. In my “day job” I’ve engaged in sales more or less the “wrong” way because networking is a challenge in the structure of my territory. With dsmBUZZ I’m learning and applying the most powerful aspect of networking that answers the question, “What can I do for you?” It feels wonderful to ask and even better when I can actually say, “I can do that.” In the past several months, networking has been like a beacon of sunshine that peaks through the fog of focusing on “what’s in it for me.” I like it. I want to live it all the time. That’s my personal goal.

Interestingly, one payoff perk for me with dsmBUZZ has been meeting really inspiring and creative entrepreneurs that live right HERE in Des Moines. There is a bounty of inspirational, insane, and articulate people in our merchant community that make conscious consumerism more worthwhile. Not that there isn’t statistical data that supports the notion that buying locally actually benefits us all right here, but what a bonus to buy something for much more than instant gratification. Is it possible to look at consumerism kind of like networking with an emphasis that focuses on a mutually beneficial transaction? I wonder.
