Eat, Drink and Be Greek at the 2007 Food Fair

Each year - the first weekend in June - is the Greek Food Fair in Des Moines.

Greek Orthodox Church of St. George (map)
35th Street and Cottage Grove
515.277.0780
Saturday, June 2 5-10 p.m.
Sunday, June 3 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.

We spent several hours there last night. It’s an event where you can eat great food and enjoy spending time with members of your community. In some instances, we only see friends once a year at this event. Or maybe it’s a chance to deepen a relationship with an acquaintance or colleague. And it’s always about making new friends and understanding their traditions.

Take a tour through the church. Enjoy a complete Greek dinner or your choice of a la carte items like shish kabobs, meatballs with rice pilaf, or gyros.

Sample Greek wine or beer. And if you like desserts, this is the place to splurge on Greek pastries. My favorite is the Baklava sundae with coffee ice cream.

There’s something for everyone including childrens’ activities and dancing. You still have time to get over there today. If not, mark your calendar for next year. This is an event you don’t want to miss.
